Mercy in a Mediocre Sunrise

So, at 4:30 I felt like God was nudging me to get out of bed. I resisted. I was tired. He kept after me in my thoughts as I kept trying to go back to sleep. I told Him I needed to rest, cause you know, I know more about what I need….

It seemed like this early wake up call had to do with the sunrise…I do love to watch the sun rise. I gave in, thinking…this is going to be amazing.

It was not amazing.

First I couldn’t figure out where to be. On the front porch I would be too exposed in my jammies. I decided on an upstairs window. Making coffee got the dog stirred up, so I let her out while my coffee brewed, hoping to stand outside and begin gazing upward…the smell of skunk was so strong I darted back in.

Coffee in hand, I headed upstairs, a little more awake and excited…expectant. I had my phone handy to capture this moment where I obeyed and God gloriously showed up! And this is what I saw…

…nothing spectacular. Just a regular sunrise…I kept thinking it would get more amazing. It did not. I mean, it was pretty…but not spectacular…not what I expected.

I sat down a little disappointed, and thought, I got up for this??

And then God spoke to my heart…

“Thanks for comin….I’ve been working 24 hours on this sunrise. I have painted gazillions of them since the moment I separated light from darkness. (Gazillions..that is what I heard in my head, and I chuckle typing it…loving that God speaks our language.) The sun sets and the sun rises…you can be sure of that…and I am in every moment.

Can you see this in your life? There are dark times and times of light. Times you see clearly and enjoy the view and times it is dark and nothing makes sense. It’s not about what you see, it’s about what I am doing. Trust me, that even when it’s not what you expect, I am always working for your Good. Keep showing up, inviting me into all your days…and nights.

Thanks for getting up. I love you…it’s going to be a Good day”

Wow. Worth it!! He loves me. Oh how He loves you and me.

And y’all, He’s got this whole big world and all of our days in His hands. We can trust Him with it all…

Thanks for reading this. Have a Good day. 😊

The steadfast love of the Lordnever ceases;
 his mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

I’m an empty-nester mom from Franklin, Tennessee. I live with my husband of 25 years, Richard. I am blessed with friends and family who love me, encourage me…and talk me into doing stuff that scares me. Over the years I have shared my writings with them and they suggested I start this blog. So…. here it is. I offer it with one hand over my face, peeking through my fingers as I click on the word “publish” … hoping with all my heart you find something meaningful here. Mishelle Phillips

  1. Oh Shell, that was beautiful and so encouraging. Thank you for sharing. You have made my day today. Yes, great is the faithfulness of our God. In Jesus Calling today, it says that we can lean on, trust and be confident in our God.
